A night of southern outlaw rock n’ roll by local and national artists and a compare and contrast of lighting from one night to the next.
The opener for the night was Six Shot Revival, who I’d had the pleasure of shooting some promo work for and enjoyed shooting them live for the first time. Their bluesy classic rock style was a great kick off to the night of southern outlaw rock n’ roll.
Next up was Atlanta’s Bigfoot featuring members from Atlanta’s Artimus Pyledriver, Gonzalez, sprinkled with local guitar aficionado Evil Jim. This is the kind of band you want to see at your local bar, or opening for your favorite regional and national acts. Over the top musicianship with appreciated homage to classic american rock n roll. Bigfoot was followed by Stone Mountain Freeway who for whatever reason played without any stage lighting. While I can shoot by candlelight, no light I’m afraid is a lost cause. Pay the LD guys.
Headliner Nashville Pussy owned the evening with their original and now classic outlaw southern rock sound and presentation. A lengthy set spanning their 15 year career that would both please and cause blush to the likes of The Ramones, Hank Williams Jr, AC/DC, and Metallica.
Shooting Notes:
Shooting compared to the previous night at the venue shows the stark reality a bit of lighting can make in the same room upon the same stage night to night. Physical shooting conditions were identical to the previous night with added challenges of more attendees and more active stage performances. The same lighting setup, though with about two stops less of light being presented upon the stage from the previous night. Whereas night one metered around a manageable 1/250 F2.8 ISO3200-6400, night two fell in the neighborhood of 1/125 F2.8 ISO 6400-12,800. This comes into the realm of turning dark to light without control of the light at hand. Coupled with more aggressive stage movement, sharpness and detail become major factors as does framing from the crowd shooting positions. F1.4 and F1.8 primes would have given those stops back and equalized the lighting presentation though would have been challenging in the dynamic shooting positions with inability to “zoom with the feet” amongst the tightly packed and aggressive crowd. A blood from stone night indeed.
